"Where a man feels at home,
outside of where he's born,
is where he's meant to go."

In my seven years as a full-time translator and proofreader I’ve tackled texts of all kinds, from academic and literary to legal and commercial. Here are some of the highlights.

If you’ve got a text in Polish or German and you want it to read in English as if it were written in English, or you’ve got an English text that needs polishing, correcting or even rewriting, contact me for a quote.

Whether translating or proofreading, I make it my business to understand exactly what the writer means before I work at expressing that meaning using the right words in the right order. Studying philosophy in a foreign language has prepared me to decipher even the most cryptic texts, and years of writing and directing have given me a command of English style and idiom.

I look forward to working with you.

"Joshua Crone is an ideal translator: linguistic dexterity, ability to work quickly, punctuality, educational background – all of the highest caliber." [Polish original]

- Grzegorz Jankowicz, Ph.D., Editor of the Culture section of Tygodnik Powszechny, Vice President of the Korporacja Ha!art foundation

"I’m happy to confirm that you’ve done a brilliant job of translating a series of often densely worded and highly technical texts for the website of the Corpus Medicorum Graecorum/ Latinorum. Instead of delivering a merely literal translation, you’ve managed to formulate the source text anew and idiomatically in the target language. Our office is very satisfied with your work." [German original]

- Dr. Roland Wittwer, Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Corpus Medicorum Graecorum/Latinorum

"The Alexander Zelwerowicz State Theatre Academy has employed Joshua Crone as an English translator since May 2010. His translations include Andrzej Strzelecki’s play The Map, and a stage adaptation of The Maids of Wilko, based on a short story by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz. The Academy also consults Mr. Crone on language issues, such as the wording of the elements in a diploma supplement, or the official English name of the Academy. We value Mr. Crone’s feel for the language, his competence and his knowledge. Mr. Crone’s translations are always executed promptly and diligently, even under severe time constraints. The professionalism and high quality of his work makes him a translator and business partner worth recommending." [Polish original]

- Beata Szczucinska, Chancellor of the Alexander Zelwerowicz State Theatre Academy in Warsaw

"Joshua is an outstanding English-language proofreader. He proofread the book James Joyce and After. Writer and Time (Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010), edited by myself and Katarzyna Bazarnik, as well as my habilitation thesis Intertextual Dialogue with the Victorian Past in the Contemporary Novel (Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang, 2012). The work was carried out promptly, thoroughly and entirely competently. Mr. Crone has both knowledge of and an intuitive grasp of language, and he handles academic texts admirably." - Dr. hab. Bozena Kucala, English Department, Jagiellonian University

"Joshua proofread my entire dissertation on very short notice; I’m very pleased with the results. He works extremely professionally and - even when time is short - can be relied upon unconditionally. What's more, he was always friendly and available; communication was excellent and working with him was fun. I'm very grateful for his outstanding work, and I recommend him without reservation." - Sebastian Odzuck, Ph.D., Göttingen

"Joshua has worked with the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute since 2008. He regularly translates “Poland OnStage”, a newsletter on the contemporary Polish theatre scene for foreign theatre professionals – theatre and festival directors, producers, critics and promoters. He’s a trustworthy and conscientious translator. Working with him is a pleasure." [Polish original]

- Malgorzata Blasinska, Manager, Theatre Promotion Department, Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute

I met Joshua when he invited me to participate in an international theatre project titled “Four Views of Golgotha” that he conceived and organized for Holy Week 2006 in Krakow’s Klub Alchemia. Joshua translated the one-act play “Pieta” I wrote especially for the project, and the play was staged in Polish with English surtitles. He made a major contribution to the production, and it was a pleasure working with him. To this day I remain impressed not only by his literary and theatrical talent, but also by his considerable organizational skills. [Polish original]

- Zenon Fajfer, writer and literary theorist, co-editor of Ha!art's Liberatura imprint

"Joshua Crone did a wonderful job proofreading my Ph. D. dissertation, published as Joyce and Liberature. I also collaborated with him on several other projects. He is a remarkable proofreader, very precise, knowledgeable, and perceptive. His proofreading is accurate, and his revisions always aim at clarifying the authors’ points while respecting their individual style. I am also grateful to him for pointing out some logical flaws or inaccuracies and tactfully suggesting ways of rewriting that have improved the original texts (when I acted as the editor) or my translations. Finally, I need to mention that Josh is able to work to tight deadlines. He is by far the best proofreader I have ever collaborated with.

- Dr. Katarzyna Bazarnik, Assistant Professor, English Department, Jagiellonian University

"Joshua proofread my doctoral dissertation in philosophy. Correcting a dissertation is to my mind one of the most difficult tasks a proofreader can undertake. Apart from correcting the language, the proofreader must also grasp the meaning of the sentences and develop a feel for a terminology that – especially in the case of philosophy – is somewhat extravagant. Furthermore, the text is usually long and the time allocated for proofreading short.

"Joshua’s work was uncommonly fast, completely reliable, and most importantly, extremely precise. He corrected even the most difficult terminology properly, an invaluable advantage, especially when dealing with specialist texts. His broad educational background enables him to work in the most diverse fields. As several native English speakers have already confirmed, his revision of my dissertation is idiomatic and indistinguishable from a text written by a native speaker.

"I recommend Joshua as a proofreader without reservation. He has met and exceeded my expectations. His combination of linguistic and technical competency and friendly manner is truly unique. This certainly won’t be the last time I engage him." [German original]
